For my purposes, adding the font awesome css declaration to my style.css did the trick. The http thing you’re referencing wasn’t an issue for me as the tel:555-555-5555 seems to work without issue. thanks again.
What exactly did you place inside the phone field in the widget?
I just tried
tel:18001234
and it generates the HTML like this w/o the jQuery: http://pastebin.com/raw/94XHdaaa. Notice the double “tel: “.aah never mind, just realized I hardcoded “tel: ” in the functions.php code.

I would love to add a WhatsApp icon to have people send me messages, do you know who this can be done? Tried to add “whatsapp://send?abid=username&text=Hello%2C%20World!” with no luck.
