How to add widget areas on top of background images in WorkStation Pro

How would you add widget areas on top of the 2 background images in Workstation Theme?

I shall greatly appreciate it if you might come up with a tutorial about this.

In this article I share how two widget areas can be registered and set up so widgets placed in these widget areas appear overlayed on top of image sections 1 and 2 in Workstation Pro's front page. Additionally we shall darken the image using CSS so the white text can be easily read.

    Did you insert the wrong gist file in step 2? Looks like gistfile2.php was omitted and gistfile1.php listed twice.
